8 Book Suggestions

May 13, 2015 |

Here’s a list and links to some of my favorite books related to design and what you can expect to get from each book. If you’re not into reading, force yourself. It took me way too long to realize there’s information in books that you can’t easily find online. If you’re “too busy” try audio-books. They can be very inspirational to listen to while you work.

Steal Like An Artist

by Austin Kleon

A great short book that you can read in a few sittings. This book goes over the facts about creativity. Everyone is inspired by everyone and everything and you must use those experiences to create your voice.

Share Your Work

by Austin Kleon

Another short but sweet book from Austin Kleon this book encourages artists to share something everyday. This book is the reason I have an alarm go off everyday to share something. Doesn’t just have to be work though, it can be anything that gives people an idea of who you are and what you care about.

Manage Your Day-to-Day

by Jocelyn K. Glei

A great book from the 99u series that’s more like several short stories from some of the most knowledgeable people on how they manage their day and cut the things that makes them unproductive.

Where Good Ideas Come From

by Steven Johnson

One of my favorite books that goes into several inventions and how they came to existence. Creativity is about experiencing things and making connections to create “new” ideas.

The War of Art

by Steven Pressfield

I only like about 50% of this book but there’s so many little sections that will get you thinking about how you can work harder and create more. “the more scared you are of a something, the more sure you can be that you have to do it.”

Work for Money, Design for Love

by David Airey

A fantastic book for people getting started in freelance.

Design Currency

by Jenn Visocky O’Grady and Ken Visocky O’Grady

A great book that helped me understand the value of the artwork that I create for clients and their users. Keep metrics on everything!

Kern and Burn

by Tim Hoover and Jessica Karle Heltzel

This book is a series of Q&A with some of the greatest minds in design. They talk about several topics like starting their business and overcoming failures.
